I read an article few days ago regarding the mesothelioma cancer clinical trials somewhere from the internet. The article was all about studies of new treatments in patients who are diagnosed with the mesothelioma cancer.

These treatments are most often new chemotherapy drugs, or sometimes surgery in combination with a drug treatment. Researchers perform a clinical trial when there is some reason to believe that the treatment under evaluation may aid patients. In general researchers perform clinical trials to determine whether a treatment works, whether it is more effective then existing treatments, whether the side effects are too severe to justify the treatments use, and which patients benefit most from the treatment. At any given time, there are usually between 15 to 20 active clinical trials throughout the world investigating new therapies for mesothelioma cancer. Researchers are conducting more than half of those trials in the United States.

While being treated for mesothelioma cancer, a doctor may suggest that a patient look into a clinical trial. Though this does not mean that the patient has no other hope, the patient should be aware of the risks associated with clinical trials. No one knows in advance if the treatment will work or exactly what side effects will occur.

Researchers conduct clinical trials in steps called phases. Each phase answers certain questions. Clinical trials are usually classified into one of three phases.

Phase I trials evaluate how doctors should administer a new drug (i.e. by mouth, injected into the blood, or injected into the muscle), how often, and at what dose. A Phase I trial usually enrolls only a small number of patients, sometimes as few as a dozen.

In this posting we will discuss one form of treatment of the mesothelioma cancer, that is through surgery.

Before you consider surgery, please consider your overall health. Make sure your health is evaluated carefully by a doctor. Make sure your doctor have you tested to make sure that you don’t have metastatic disease. Metastatic disease is cancer that spreads to distant area of your body.

There may be an occasion where cancer is only in one area of the pleura, where surgery can be used to cure mesothelioma cancer. Using surgery, it can remove part, or all, of the pleura and tissues closes to the cancer. Sometime, the affected side which involves the pleura, whole lung, and diagram are removed along with the tumor.

Even though you may do the surgery, beware that even surgery may not cure mesothelioma cancer. It is important that you discuss this with your doctor before hand so that you have the full understanding of what is happening/going on with the surgery. Only you can consent the surgery, so please make sure you have a full understanding of what is involved.

Sometime, in order to achieve the full effect of surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy may be involved in order to ensure that mesothelioma cancer is, at best cured.

After operation, sometime it can take many weeks to recover from the surgery. In order to speed up recovery, it is best to be active as possible. If you are required to stay in bed, keep regular leg movements to stay active. To help out with the breathing exercise, a physiotherapist will work with you on this.

Intravenous infusion and drainage tubes will be on you in order to maintain and monitor your overall health. Tubes usually go away when you begin to eat and drink normally and when the overall health improves.

You may feel some pain or discomfort after the surgery. This is quite normal and by making a request to the nurse or doctor, you can control it with painkillers. Be aware that pain or discomfort may persist for few weeks. Be sure to ask your doctor on what to do about the pain.

Mesothelioma cancer patients usually go home 5 to 10 days after the operation. When you go home, be sure to exercise often but gently to build your strength. Asbestos Levels Too High at Chicago Demolition Site

Chicago, Illinois - The contractors responsible for the demolition of a 9-story building on Chicago’s North Side failed to do their job correctly, resulting in the release of high levels of asbestos and a subsequent request for a work stoppage, reports a story aired on WTHI-TV 10.

According to the story, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) is seeking a court order to stop the demolition of the building, constructed in 1923 and once home to a mental hospital and then a hotel. The agency has asked Chicago Attorney General Lisa Madigan to seek an injunction to prevent the contractors, Zidan Management Group and Dubai Construction, from tearing down the building, which contains a large amount of asbestos materials.

The EPA claims that its inspectors discovered that the two companies were not following proper asbestos removal procedures during the initial phases of demolition. In most cases, proper procedure involves safely removing asbestos materials before demolition begins or wetting these same materials before demolition so that fibers aren’t able to be released when the building comes down. The EPA also notes that they had no notification of the demolition and that the companies did not properly inspect for asbestos before work began.

Hence, the companies’ negligence led to the detection of unsafe levels of asbestos in the air around the building, which was constructed during a time when asbestos use was quite commonplace. The IEPA now wants a licensed, outside contractor to develop a plan to address the contamination.

Airborne asbestos fibers can be quite dangerous. Anyone working in the vicinity of such fibers without wearing proper protective gear, including masks, can inhale the fibers. These tiny, sharp particles can become imbedded in the lung area and cause the formation of cancerous tumors and an eventual diagnosis of mesothelioma.

Asbestos Removal Questionable at Old Sugar Refinery

Brooklyn, NY - The future redevelopment of the former Domino Sugar refinery in Brooklyn is already garnering the attention of local labor unions who claim that the developer chosen for the project is considering a “shady” asbestos company to tackle the removal of the carcinogenic material from the site.

An article in The Gothamist reports that Two Trees Management, which will be overseeing the project over the next decade, has raised eyebrows for considering a company whose past involvement in similar projects is questionable at best and has resulted in a few lawsuits. And it’s all done in the name of saving a few dollars, say the members of Local 78, a union that consists of lead, asbestos, and hazardous waste laborers.

The union claims that not only did the company, New York Insulation, fail to pay its employees but they also left a hazardous mess behind after doing work at the Department of Education in Brooklyn, which was being turned into condominiums. They claim that during that particular job, asbestos material was literally flying out the window,

Jed Walentas, son of Two Trees founder David Walentas, claims the company is doing the right thing by hiring New York Insulation, proclaiming “total confidence” in the company. He also said they were “better than any other bidder, union or non-union.” Jeremy Soffin, the company’s PR director, agreed, adding that Two Trees has had “excellent experience working with New York Insulation in the past.”

The old refinery on the East River was built in 1856, and by 1870, records show, it was processing more than half the sugar used in the U.S. Though it was rebuilt after a fire in 1882, most of the old buildings remain on the site. The Brooklyn plant ceased operations in 2004. Three of the buildings have landmark status, but the others – which are full of asbestos – will be either demolished or renovated.

State and federal laws demand that asbestos removal be done by a licensed contractor trained in such procedures and that it be done in ways so as not to release dangerous fibers into the air, where they can be inhaled and cause mesothelioma cancer and other diseases.

Clean-Up Halted at Old Asbestos-Filled Hotel

Raton, New Mexico - The remains of the former El Portal Hotel in Raton, New Mexico, left behind after a November 2012 fire, contain a lot more asbestos than city officials originally surmised, resulting in the shutdown of clean-up operations and necessitating new plans for removal of the material.

The Raton Range reports that some of the debris from the mid-century-built hotel contained higher levels of asbestos than first anticipated, prompting the need for special handling and disposal. Raton’s code enforcement officer, David McCarty, notified Waste Bureau Chief Analie Ashley-Marx late last week that recent tests from the charred site show that some materials left behind do indeed contain more than 1 percent asbestos. Furthermore, the material is in unstable condition, which means it’s “friable” and can release hazardous particles into the air.

El Portal owner Andy Holman claims he was unaware of the situation. He notes that when the private inspection firm he hired presented him with results, they didn’t tell him that they detected any levels of asbestos that required special attention. Hence, he moved on with the clean-up, unaware of any concerns until officials halted the process late last week. Unfortunately, some of the toxic waste had already been dumped in the city of Raton’s municipal landfill, which is not licensed to accept asbestos waste.

As a result, Holman will probably receive some sort of “notice of violation” and may even be fined for the error. Chuck Akeley, the Solid Waste Bureau’s enforcement manager, said they’ll make a determination when “all the facts are in.” The media was not informed as to how the city gained the information about the improprieties.

“We’ve been working very closely with Raton,” Akeley said of discussions between the Solid Waste Bureau and the city. “We want to see this debris disposed of properly… and that’s the goal. He does not believe the debris currently left behind poses a health hazard to those who live or work in the area but encourages residents to abide by the warning signs posted at the site so as to avoid asbestos exposure, which can cause cancer.

Investigation Continues in Paterson, NJ Asbestos Incident

Paterson, NJ - As authorities in Paterson, New Jersey continue to investigate why prison inmates and untrained municipal employees were charged with the task of removing asbestos materials from municipal offices that were undergoing renovation, the city has finally decided to seek out a private licensed contractor to remove and disposal of the toxic debris.

“This is part of being in compliance with what (the state) requested,” Paterson Public Works Director Christopher Coke said, noting that the city council will meet next week to vote on a resolution that charges them with the task of gathering bids to complete the project.

In the meantime, many still wonder what city officials were thinking when they drafted inmates and employees not licensed to handle asbestos to start the job several months ago. The city’s law department and the state’s labor department have confirmed that they are involved in the investigation as is Sheriff Richard Berdnik, who is interested in learning the facts because the inmates used in the project were part of his Sheriff’s Labor Assistance Program (SLAP).

“Our guys weren’t equipped to do that and we weren’t educated to do that,” said Michael Jackson, a member of the executive board of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Local 2272, referring to the municipal workers. “The city tried to cut costs and it put people in danger.”

Coke claims, however, that the workers were never in danger of asbestos exposure. He says all employees were given masks and gloves while working inside the Ellison Street structure and that air and dust samples were taken and came back negative. Others say that Coke brought in a fan to clear the dust before the samples were taken.

Now, the inmates and municipal workers remain worried about their health, aware that inhaling asbestos fibers could eventually cause severe respiratory problems and issues such as the development of mesothelioma cancer.

Iron Range Community Gets Answers about Taconite and Mesothelioma

Duluth, Minnesota - Individuals who’ve spent a lifetime working in Minnesota’s taconite industry gathered last Friday evening to hear the long-awaited results of a study that could explain why the levels of mesothelioma in that region of the state are much higher than elsewhere in Minnesota.

An article in the Duluth News Tribune reports that the study found a definitive connection between the length of time an individual works in the taconite industry and an increased risk of developing mesothelioma, a form of cancer normally associated with asbestos exposure. However, the study also noted that the culprit particles that could be causing the disease are largely confined to the mines, and that, in general, they should not be reaching the surrounding communities.

Dr. Jeff Mandel, head of the University of Minnesota’s Workers Health Study research team, says the mines have safety standards and procedures in place to protect their workers but there’s still risk to those in the industry.

“This is a dusty job,” Mandel said. “No matter how you look at it, it’s dusty work. You have to make sure you protect yourself.”

But Mandel says he and his team still haven’t really found the smoking gun that explains the high rate of mesothelioma among taconite workers in Minnesota. Records show 82 Iron Range workers have died in recent years of mesothelioma, a disease that can take up to four decades or more to develop. That means some may have worked in the mines as early as the 1960s or 1970s.

“What’s new in the results released Friday is the definite link to the taconite industry,” said the article. “Every year a worker spent in the industry increased the risk of mesothelioma by 3 percent,” reported the researchers.

Researchers were focusing on what they call “elongated mineral particles” or EMPs. It was a “potential link” between cumulative exposure to workplace EMPs and mesothelioma in taconite works that seemed to appear probable during the research. “However, the link is not felt to be certain,” the team reported.

Attendees did, however, rejoice in what they viewed as a cadre of good news that came out of the report, namely that:

Air quality in communities surrounding the mines is better than in most parts of Minnesota in terms of particulates in the air.Exposure to dust from taconite operations is, in general, within safe limits.Spouses of taconite industry workers are at no greater risk of contracting dust-related lung diseases, like asbestosis or mesothelioma, than the general public in Minnesota.

Judge Imposes $850,000 Civil Penalty for Asbestos Violations

Steubenville, Ohio - A judge in Jefferson County, Ohio has imposed a large fine on the owner of a former steel facility and his affiliates for what he described as “massive asbestos violations.”

According to an account in the Norwalk Reflector, the sanctions against Arthur David Sugar, Sr.; David Sugar Excavating, LLC; Honey Creek Contracting, Inc.; Excavation Technologies Inc.; and ADS Leasing are the result of shoddy practices that occurred during the demolition of the former Weirton Steel Mill in the town of Steubenville, Ohio. The court found that the defendants showed a blatant disregard for laws governing asbestos handling and removal. Specifically, in some cases they failed to remove the material before demolition or did so in an improper manner, and also failed to notify the Ohio EPA of their intention to remove asbestos from the facility.

“Asbestos is widely known to be a dangerous, cancer-causing material which must be abated in any demolition,” Attorney General DeWine said when the verdict was announced. “The aggressive penalty issued against the defendants in this case shows that endangering Ohioans by failing to properly manage asbestos will not be tolerated.”

In 2011, Sugar and Honey Creek pleaded guilty in a United States District Court to one count of conspiracy and four counts of violating the Clean Air Act rules related to the proper removal and handling of asbestos. As a result, a trial ensued in 2012 at which time the defendants’ liability was debated, resulting in the recent penalty.

“As attorney general, I take my role in protecting the health and safety of Ohio families very seriously,” DeWine said. “I will continue to work with Ohio EPA to make sure Ohio's laws regarding asbestos are enforced across the state.”

An abundance of asbestos was used in steel mills across the country throughout much of the 20th century, so it isn’t unusual to encounter the material when doing demolition or renovation at an old mill. Asbestos may have been used in building products like floor or ceiling tiles or could have been employed as insulation for boilers, generators, pipes, and electric wiring. Individuals who worked in steel mills were constantly being exposed to the carcinogenic material. Hence, those workers are still candidates for developing diseases such as mesothelioma or other cancers.

Proposed Missouri Legislation is Double-edged Sword for Mesothelioma Patients

Kansas City, Missouri - A proposed bill in the Missouri State senate might just assist mesothelioma patients in obtaining more and better workman’s compensation for their pain and suffering if their disease was caused by asbestos exposure on-the-job, reports an article in the Lake Expo, but it will also take away their right to sue employees for their negligence.

Legislation known as Senate Bill #1 is making its way through the state government, dealing with a number of issues including one that will specifically impact those who’ve developed mesothelioma because of occupational exposure.

“The bill clearly defines ‘occupational diseases due to toxic exposure’ and requires that they be covered under workman’s compensation benefits,” state representative Ray McCarty recently told a group of business persons gathered for a meeting in the Lake of the Ozarks area. He explained that the bill would prevent employees from suing their employers over diseases such as mesothelioma.

However, McCarty points out that certain provisions in the bill would provide more and larger workers’ comp payments to individuals with mesothelioma, asbestosis, coal worker’s pneumoconiosis (or “black lung disease”), and seven other ailments. Victims of mesothelioma, for example, would receive 300 percent of the state’s average wage for 191 weeks.

Though Missouri governor Jay Nixon was at first resistant to signing the bill, changes to the original language caused a change of heart and the governor, whose family has been affected by mesothelioma cancer, is now expected to sign the bill after it passes through both the house and the senate. Many individuals are concerned, however, that this bill will prevent victims from suing for much-deserved compensation.

For decades, employees in a variety of occupations were regularly exposed to dangerous asbestos materials while on-the-job. Individuals employed as construction workers, auto mechanics, electricians, pipe fitters, insulation workers, and in a variety of other jobs have long been prime candidates for developing mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. As mesothelioma has a long latency period, many of these individuals are still being diagnosed today, despite the fact that asbestos use was generally halted at the end of the 1970s.

Asbestos Labeling Law Passes through Washington House of Representatives

Olympia, Washington - A bill which demands that all products containing asbestos and sold in Washington State stores be labeled as such, informing buyers that the product they’re purchasing could be hazardous to their health if not handled properly, has passed the second step towards becoming a law.

The Spokesman-Review reports that the proposed bill passed the House of Representatives this week with a vote of 65-28 in favor of the proposition, which was first introduced by Democratic Senator Andy Billig of Spokane.

Generally, the bill pertains mostly to construction products, many of which still contain small amounts of the harmful mineral. Under the proposed legislation, these products will be clearly labeled, allowing purchasers the option of finding a substitute product that does not contain hazardous asbestos.

Advocates for individuals already suffering from asbestos-related diseases due to on-the-job exposure, including construction workers, see the bill as a step in the right direction, though many believe the use of asbestos in the United States should be banned.

According to the article, the House first turned down an amendment proposed by Rep. Shelly Short, R-Addy, to lower the potential maximum penalties for not labeling from $10,000 to $1,000. Rep. Dave Upthegrove, D-Des Moines, explained that rather than a fine, violators are more likely to get a warning and the opportunity to take corrective action. The higher figure is a maximum, not a set amount for every infraction, he explained.

The next step in making the asbestos labeling bill a reality is a signature by Washington State Governor Jay Inslee. That should happen soon.
