I read an article few days ago regarding the mesothelioma cancer clinical trials somewhere from the internet. The article was all about studies of new treatments in patients who are diagnosed with the mesothelioma cancer.

These treatments are most often new chemotherapy drugs, or sometimes surgery in combination with a drug treatment. Researchers perform a clinical trial when there is some reason to believe that the treatment under evaluation may aid patients. In general researchers perform clinical trials to determine whether a treatment works, whether it is more effective then existing treatments, whether the side effects are too severe to justify the treatments use, and which patients benefit most from the treatment. At any given time, there are usually between 15 to 20 active clinical trials throughout the world investigating new therapies for mesothelioma cancer. Researchers are conducting more than half of those trials in the United States.

While being treated for mesothelioma cancer, a doctor may suggest that a patient look into a clinical trial. Though this does not mean that the patient has no other hope, the patient should be aware of the risks associated with clinical trials. No one knows in advance if the treatment will work or exactly what side effects will occur.

Researchers conduct clinical trials in steps called phases. Each phase answers certain questions. Clinical trials are usually classified into one of three phases.

In this posting we will discuss one form of treatment of the mesothelioma cancer, that is through surgery.

Before you consider surgery, please consider your overall health. Make sure your health is evaluated carefully by a doctor. Make sure your doctor have you tested to make sure that you don’t have metastatic disease. Metastatic disease is cancer that spreads to distant area of your body.

There may be an occasion where cancer is only in one area of the pleura, where surgery can be used to cure mesothelioma cancer. Using surgery, it can remove part, or all, of the pleura and tissues closes to the cancer. Sometime, the affected side which involves the pleura, whole lung, and diagram are removed along with the tumor.

Even though you may do the surgery, beware that even surgery may not cure mesothelioma cancer. It is important that you discuss this with your doctor before hand so that you have the full understanding of what is happening/going on with the surgery. Only you can consent the surgery, so please make sure you have a full understanding of what is involved.

Sometime, in order to achieve the full effect of surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy may be involved in order to ensure that mesothelioma cancer is, at best cured.

After operation, sometime it can take many weeks to recover from the surgery. In order to speed up recovery, it is best to be active as possible. If you are required to stay in bed, keep regular leg movements to stay active. To help out with the breathing exercise, a physiotherapist will work with you on this.

Intravenous infusion and drainage tubes will be on you in order to maintain and monitor your overall health. Tubes usually go away when you begin to eat and drink normally and when the overall health improves.

You may feel some pain or discomfort after the surgery. This is quite normal and by making a request to the nurse or doctor, you can control it with painkillers. Be aware that pain or discomfort may persist for few weeks. Be sure to ask your doctor on what to do about the pain.

Mesothelioma cancer patients usually go home 5 to 10 days after the operation. When you go home, be sure to exercise often but gently to build your strength. Be sure to ask your doctor on type of exercises that are appropriate for you. Typically walking and swimming exercise will suffice for those with surgery in the approximation of lungs.

Iron Range Community Gets Answers about Taconite and Mesothelioma

Duluth, Minnesota - Individuals who’ve spent a lifetime working in Minnesota’s taconite industry gathered last Friday evening to hear the long-awaited results of a study that could explain why the levels of mesothelioma in that region of the state are much higher than elsewhere in Minnesota.

An article in the Duluth News Tribune reports that the study found a definitive connection between the length of time an individual works in the taconite industry and an increased risk of developing mesothelioma, a form of cancer normally associated with asbestos exposure. However, the study also noted that the culprit particles that could be causing the disease are largely confined to the mines, and that, in general, they should not be reaching the surrounding communities.

Dr. Jeff Mandel, head of the University of Minnesota’s Workers Health Study research team, says the mines have safety standards and procedures in place to protect their workers but there’s still risk to those in the industry.

“This is a dusty job,” Mandel said. “No matter how you look at it, it’s dusty work. You have to make sure you protect yourself.”

But Mandel says he and his team still haven’t really found the smoking gun that explains the high rate of mesothelioma among taconite workers in Minnesota. Records show 82 Iron Range workers have died in recent years of mesothelioma, a disease that can take up to four decades or more to develop. That means some may have worked in the mines as early as the 1960s or 1970s.

“What’s new in the results released Friday is the definite link to the taconite industry,” said the article. “Every year a worker spent in the industry increased the risk of mesothelioma by 3 percent,” reported the researchers.

Researchers were focusing on what they call “elongated mineral particles” or EMPs. It was a “potential link” between cumulative exposure to workplace EMPs and mesothelioma in taconite works that seemed to appear probable during the research. “However, the link is not felt to be certain,” the team reported.

Attendees did, however, rejoice in what they viewed as a cadre of good news that came out of the report, namely that:

Air quality in communities surrounding the mines is better than in most parts of Minnesota in terms of particulates in the air.Exposure to dust from taconite operations is, in general, within safe limits.Spouses of taconite industry workers are at no greater risk of contracting dust-related lung diseases, like asbestosis or mesothelioma, than the general public in Minnesota.

Proposed Missouri Legislation is Double-edged Sword for Mesothelioma Patients

Kansas City, Missouri - A proposed bill in the Missouri State senate might just assist mesothelioma patients in obtaining more and better workman’s compensation for their pain and suffering if their disease was caused by asbestos exposure on-the-job, reports an article in the Lake Expo, but it will also take away their right to sue employees for their negligence.

Legislation known as Senate Bill #1 is making its way through the state government, dealing with a number of issues including one that will specifically impact those who’ve developed mesothelioma because of occupational exposure.

“The bill clearly defines ‘occupational diseases due to toxic exposure’ and requires that they be covered under workman’s compensation benefits,” state representative Ray McCarty recently told a group of business persons gathered for a meeting in the Lake of the Ozarks area. He explained that the bill would prevent employees from suing their employers over diseases such as mesothelioma.

However, McCarty points out that certain provisions in the bill would provide more and larger workers’ comp payments to individuals with mesothelioma, asbestosis, coal worker’s pneumoconiosis (or “black lung disease”), and seven other ailments. Victims of mesothelioma, for example, would receive 300 percent of the state’s average wage for 191 weeks.

Though Missouri governor Jay Nixon was at first resistant to signing the bill, changes to the original language caused a change of heart and the governor, whose family has been affected by mesothelioma cancer, is now expected to sign the bill after it passes through both the house and the senate. Many individuals are concerned, however, that this bill will prevent victims from suing for much-deserved compensation.

For decades, employees in a variety of occupations were regularly exposed to dangerous asbestos materials while on-the-job. Individuals employed as construction workers, auto mechanics, electricians, pipe fitters, insulation workers, and in a variety of other jobs have long been prime candidates for developing mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.
