The three principal organs affected by Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that develops in the lining of large internal organs. It is caused by exposure to asbestos. Because asbestos fibres are tiny, they become lodged in the wall organs internal and, over time, lead to the growth of cancerous tumours. The time period between asbestos exposure and mesothelioma cancer onset may be several decades, this is why many patients fail to recognize the early symptoms of the disease. Unfortunately, this leads to a delayed diagnosis of mesothelioma, which in turn reduces the life expectancy of the patient.

Patients often develop mesothelioma were exposed to asbestos in their place of work, such as the marine shipyards and construction sites. Repeated exposure to asbestos means that they inhaled millions of tiny asbestos fibres which have remained in their body. The three bodies most often affected by Mesothelioma are the lungs, heart and stomach.

Lungs: Pleural mesothelioma

The most common form of mesothelioma, known as pleural mesothelioma, affects the lungs. The disease results when the inhalation of asbestos fibers become deposited in the lining that surrounds the lungs and cause the growth of cancer cells around them. This process causes the lining of the lungs to fill with fluid, which interferes with respiration and causes pain in the chest. At this stage, pleural mesothelioma patients more notice that something is wrong and seek the assistance of a doctor.

Stomach: Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Asbestos fibers can also become lodged in the wall around the stomach. This type of mesothelioma, which is called Peritoneal Mesothelioma, occurs when a person eats food covered with asbestos fibres microscopic. The fibrous material remains in the stomach lining for a long time (20-50 years) until it prompts the growth of cancer cells. Much more rare that pleural mesothelioma, accounting for about 10-20% of all cases of mesothelioma is Peritoneal Mesothelioma.

Heart: Pericardial mesothelioma

Tiny asbestos fibres can also become lodged in the wall of the heart, where they can cause cancer. This form of mesothelioma is called pericardial mesothelioma. It is a very rare type of mesothelioma, accounting for approximately 10 per cent of all cases of mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma: Medical and legal considerations

The treatment of all forms of mesothelioma is similar and typically involves a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
